Are you looking for some unique, hand-made ceramic art made locally?  Come check out Douglas Kenney Ceramics.  He specializes in large, high fired, ceramic plates and tile for the wall.  His ceramic sculpture stack forms are up to nine feet tall and feature abstract underglaze paintings and symbols.  Some pieces have gold and platinum lusters and overglaze paintings. There will be plenty of wheel thrown vases and functional work as well.

Douglas Kenney’s work is in the permanent collection of the Smithsonian American Art Museum’s, Renwick Gallery.  He has an MFA degree in Ceramics/Ceramics Sculpture from Rochester Institute of Technology School for American Craft. Born in San Diego, Kenney has worked with clay for over 35 years. He is the co-founder and owner of the Kids Like Clay After School program. Kids Like Clay was created to teach young children the ceramic arts in order to share it with future generations.

Jana Kenney – Her ceramic work consists of stoneware organic sculptures large and small. Ms. Kenney also creates vases, bowls and cups for the functional use.

She is the Creator of Contemporary French Ceramics Exchange in San Diego and has been a member of the International Academy of Ceramics for over 20 years. Her ceramic art has been exhibited in many different countries around the world. She is a co-owner of the Kids Like Clay After School program.

I am not here to discourage young ceramists from pursuing their dreams… My advice is to work hard and make at least 10 of each style, size or shape of your creations. Be as creative as possible within your kiln size. Try to leave some steps out of processes during art making to have more varied results. Use production techniques of working.
